Repetitive Strain Injuries

Work-related upper limb disorders, as the name suggests occur because of repetitive activities at work. MWR has lots of experience with such claims, which many solicitors are reluctant to take on because they are often difficult to prove.

Examples of successful cases include:

  • Factory worker making cardboard boxes on a highly repetitive basis
  • Chef chopping vegetables throughout the shift
  • Factory worker tamping down bags of powder all day
  • 999 call operator typing without sufficient breaks

Employers have a duty to warn employees in jobs where there is a risk of a work-related upper limb disorder so that they can report symptoms at the earliest opportunity. They must also carry out regular health surveillance so that any early symptoms or problems can be identified and measures taken to avoid an injury developing. There should be adequate breaks and a formal system of job rotation which should avoid problems developing in the first place.
