Safety first on Inspection Day
19 October 2005

A LEADING Lancashire law firm which represents thousands of injured workers every year is urging businesses to embrace National Inspection Day and carry out safety reviews in their workplace.

National Inspection Day is on October 26 and is part of the European Health and Safety Week. The purpose of the day is to encourage safety representatives to inspect their workplace.

According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROsPA), there are 1.6 million workplace injuries every year in the UK as well as 2.2 million cases of ill health caused or made worse by work. Over 25 million working days are lost annually as a result of workplace accidents, injuries and ill-health.

Jane Booker, partner at leading Lancashire based law firm MWR, said: “Employers have a duty to safeguard their staff and ensure they work in a safe environment so National Inspection Day comes as a timely reminder.

“Carrying out inspections not only identifies potential hazards but demonstrates that health and safety is being taken seriously.

“Inspection Day is an ideal opportunity for safety inspectors to work with their bosses and employees - who will know their factory or office inside out – to identify existing problems and mitigate future accidents.”

Simple guides to health and safety inspections and checklist forms can be downloaded from trade union websites such as www.tuc.org.uk.
