THE CHAIRMAN of Friends of Kenya Cricket UK (FOKC), Surinder Biant, jetted into Preston on his way back from Australia to lend his support to MWR Solicitors’ Kricket 4 Kenya (K4K) charity appeal.
Surinder met representatives from the Preston based law firm to discuss the project and he delivered the great news that FOKC is officially supporting the campaign.
Surinder said:
“We are very excited to be getting on board with the campaign. When we were contacted about the appeal by MWR the committee and I did not hesitate to give it our blessing. There are many people in the rural areas of Kenya that are crying out for sports equipment and this appeal will make a big difference.
“One of the main areas that we will be assisting MWR is the distribution of the donated items once they arrive in Kenya. We will personally ensure that all of the collected items go to the people that need it the most.
“I will begin negotiations with Kenyan Government to plan the arrival of the kit late next year in which representatives from MWR and FOKC will travel to different schools and villages in Kenya to deliver the sports kit.”
Jane Booker, a partner at MWR, said:
“The appeal is starting to really gather momentum and with FOKC on board it adds more weight to the appeal. FOKC is a very well respected organisation that does a great deal of work in Kenya and we are extremely thankful for their expertise and assistance.
“We are appealing to sports clubs, schools, individuals and leisure centres to donate whatever sports kit they can. All the donations will be greatly appreciated and go towards helping some of the less fortunate people in Kenya.”
Kenya is one of the world’s poorest nations and at the start of 2006 suffered one of its worst droughts. This has threatened the lives of thousands of children across the country and in some of the worst affected areas the rate of malnutrition is double the World Health Organisation’s critical rate.
MWR have set up a drop off centre at its offices on Cannon Street, Preston, for people to make donations. There will also be a guest book, which will be taken over to Kenya with the kit, for people to sign and leave messages for the children. For further information, call Jayne Raven on 01772 254201.
