You beauty! Kricket 4 Kenya campaign forges Australian alliance
4 January 2007

PRESTON-based law firm, MWR Solicitors, has put aside its Ashes rivalry to launch a branch of its Kricket 4 Kenya charity in Australia.

Australian journalist, Nick Deverell, will head up the Sydney-based operation, after he made contact with MWR having learnt about the campaign through the Friends of Kenya Cricket organisation.

Nick is the Kenya editor for Cricket Europe, one of the biggest cricket websites in the world, and he will be promoting the appeal Down Under to help unprivileged children in Kenya.

Jayne Raven, marketing manager at MWR, said: “It was a pleasant surprise to be contacted by an Australian group which share our passion for the project.

“Despite our current Ashes rivalry we are working together to collect as much cricket and sports equipment as possible to send to the children in Kenya.

“We have had a great response from sports clubs, schools and individuals in the UK and we are positive that Kricket 4 Kenya will be a great success Down Under.”

The collection in Australia is set to begin officially in the New Year but the group has already received many donations from local gyms and cricket clubs. The group has set up two drop off points in Sydney to collect all the donations.

The Kricket 4 Kenya in Australia appeal will work with the Kenyans in Australia Society and two cricket charities that will assist in the collection and transportation of the goods to Kenya.

Nick Deverell said: “We are so pleased to be on board with the appeal, it is a great initiative and one that I believe will end up making a huge difference to the children in Kenya.

“It will hopefully help to bring on a new generation of Kenyan players who will now have a chance rather than nothing. We are looking forward to joining forces with MWR Solicitors.”

Kenya is one of the world’s poorest nations and at the start of 2006 suffered one of its worst droughts.

This has threatened the lives of thousands of children across the country. MWR has set up a drop off centre at its offices on Cannon Street, Preston, for people to make donations.

There is also a guest book, which will be taken over to Kenya with the kit, for people to sign and leave messages for the children. For further information, call Jayne Raven on 01772 254201.
