Let the games begin
27 December 2007

PRESTON based law firm, MWR Solicitors, encouraged school children to go for gold when they sponsored the Primary School Indoor Games at the Guild Hall in Preston.

The annual event, organised by Preston City Council’s sports development unit and held in association with the Preston Harriers, saw more than 300 potential future Olympians from local schools compete against each other in a number of indoor events including the 100 metre sprint, relay, triple jump, hurdles and javelin.

Reflecting the traditional Olympic Games, each school team represented a different country of the world and were encouraged to get into the competitive spirit by dressing in their chosen country’s colours and making replica national flags to promote their team.

Once the events were over, each school team, consisting of six boys, six girls and two spectators, competed in the Grand Relay Race. The winners of this were named games champions. Medals were given to the top three schools and a trophy was awarded to the winners

Altaf Patel, a partner at MWR Solicitors, said: “MWR Solicitors is committed to helping promote the importance of a healthy lifestyle for children. We have a tradition of sponsoring sporting talent and being involved in such an exciting event as the Primary School Indoor Games can only help encourage the children to be more active. And who knows, we may have just uncovered the next few world champion athletes!”

Preston City Council’s Sports Development Unit also arranged an athletics development programme that took place following the event. Coaches from Preston Harriers selected athletes to attend specially set up training squads and from these, they will create a ‘super squad’ to represent Preston in a competition against schools from other Lancashire boroughs.
