Why is Health and Safety Week of Action important to you?
By Jane Booker, partner
We’re now into the first few days of the Health and Safety Week of Action, organised by The Trade Union Co-ordinating Group
Events like these are essential to highlight how this country’s health and safety still needs improving.
More alarmingly the proposed cuts to the HSE and a relaxation in health and safety rules means that things will only deteriorate.
Here at MWR we see first hand how even minor accidents can have a substantial effect on a person’s life. All too often we see clients and their families driven to almost financial ruin as a result of a relatively short absence from work following an accident.
According to the HSE between April 2009 and 2010 26,061 major injuries occurred at work, including amputation and burns.
Any reduction in the monitoring of health and safety, or the relaxation of the rules, will lead to the less scrupulous employers getting away with quite literally murder.
That’s why Sadiq Vohra, another partner at MWR, and I will be joining the rally on Wednesday, March 2 at the House of Commons to lend our support to our union friends and colleagues in highlighting the need for vigilance.
